The Art of Engine Turning

In the 17th century 'Rose' machines were invented which were able to carve intricate geometric patterns in the backs of watches and clocks, buttons, etc. Not only were the patterns themeselves quite pretty, they helped make soft metal's inevitable scratches less noticeable. In trying to duplicate these patterns with my machine tools I scaled them up to take advantage of a machine tool's cutting capabilities. The result was different and striking. After refining tool geometry and making fixtures I applied the techniques to bowls, jars, bells, urns, and finally to the guitars. Examples of other artists are availble on my Engine Turning Links page.
